Evaluation of the Degree of Anxiety Among Primiparas According to the Manifest Anxiety Scale

Abstract
|
|
|
The author used the manifest anxiety scale of Taylor (MAS) as modified by Sugiyama and applied it in the study of 45 nonpregnant women and 195 pregnant women and obtained the following results:
1. In regard to the relationship between educational level and degree of anxiety, the degree of anxiety was highest among high school graduates(42. 10%) in nonpregnant women, and highest among middle school graduates(34.61%) in pregnant women.
2. The mean score of total anxieties among pregnant women(17.48) compared with the mean score for nonpregnant women(19.52) was somewhat less but there was no significant difference (p>0. 10).
3. The degree of measured anxiety according to stage in the pregnancy period showed a mean score of 19.40 in the early stage and 18. 50 at the end of pregnancy. There was no significant difference (p>0. 10) when compared with nonpregnant women, but the mean score of anxiety degree during mid pregnancy and the post partum period were 16.07 and 15.71 respectively.
Compared with nonpregnant women, this was extremely low and showed a significant difference(p<0.05).
